Re: [AH] Capturing / Digitizing Video Synthesizers (PAL/NTSC)

Hi Ben,

I had plenty of feedback offline.

Basically, most of the cheapo converters available now take both
PAL and NTSC down to 640x480 which is rubbish.

All of the BlackMagic boxes require a very sync'd and stable video
feed so useless for most people, wonderful for a few. You need
something called a "Time Base Corrector" rack to generate the
stable video feed. This, in my mind, is rather silly. We are living
in the future now and a decent piece of code should be able to
handle what ever crufty video is thrown at their stuff. But no.

If you are using NTSC you can use a Sony Digital-8 camera as a video
input/digitizer and then output via FireWire to the 2003 iMac that
just everyone has kicking around.

For PAL video, none of the Euro released cameras will act as a video
input. This was for copyright reasons if I understand correctly.
The excitement and frenzy around the very few PAL Digital-8 recorder
decks that come up for sale fully illustrates this.

A really fine solution suggested to me was a dedicated solid state
video recorder box from Japan: (thanks to Suit&Tie)

This seemed a little rich for me so I ordered an El-Cheapo clone
from China: (not confirmed to work yet)

It claims to support full resolution NTSC and PAL. I guess I will see.
If not, then I will have to step and get the Japanese unit.

In the event that this thing works, then I will have a little solid state
recorder that I can hang off my modular rack.

Fingers crossed, will report back here if its good.
