(idm) pc midi interface

Sorry to bother the list with this, but I figure there are loads of people
here that can help me out. :) I'm just starting to delve into the world of
computer sequencing, since I've grown tired of dealing with a small LCD
screen and pressing buttons to grapple with menus on my (admittedly out of
date) Yamaha QY10.

I am in search of a midi interface to connect to the midi/joystick 15 pin
plug on my pc. I would like to get an interface with multiple outputs
(hopefully 3, since I have a keyboard, drum machine and eventually I'll fork
out the dough for a sampler). I'm not to clear on the benefits of the midi
ins and thrus, though, so I'm not quite sure if I should get an interface
with multiple ins and thrus. Another question I have relates to some ads
I've seen for interfaces which have multiple outs, but 16 channels listed in
parentheses -- does this mean that 16 channels are split amongst all the
outs? The most promising interface I've come across so far is the Jam 52 by
Octet Design (http://www.octetdesign.com/products/midi-soundcard/), but I'd
like to hear some suggestions from some of you more experienced midi-heads!

To avoid clogging up the list and irritating someone, please send replies
privately. Thanks in advance for your help!
