Another plug for the folks at Involve Records, Bevan Smith's label based in New Zealand. There's been mention of this one from idm'ers at Cognition and Inaudible, you know the names. Without going into too much detail, (check the archives, wherever they may be.. i posted some info about the Involve cdr comp a while back). Just when you thought dub, ambience, and idm couldn't move any further then they already have, "Are You That Retail Snob?" dips deep into these elements while creating a fine atmosphere of smooth electronica sounds reminiscent of Bola, MoM, some BoC, and the signature bubbly-basslines that define Aspen's work on Involve. This one is highly recommended, and may very well be tops for 99 in my books. I wouldn't really compare last years "Album" release on Elephant Electronics as a benchmark for what to expect on AYTRS?, but the progression in sound-sculpture is still there... Contact Bevan at xxxxx@xxxxx.xxx.xx. If you reside in NZ (Stuart MacDonald?/Steve Satori?), then you may have checked out the release party which fell on the 12th of this month at the Matterhorn.. If you were there, please comment!
