I'm curious as to how most of you IDM'ers got into this scene. I arrived here as such: Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Art of Noise, Information Society, etc. (early-late 80's)=20 -TO-=20 Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, Front Line Assembly, etc. (1989)=20 -TO-=20 Le=E6ther Strip, Lassigue Bendthaus, Numb, SPK, Einst=FCrzende Neubauten, Klinik, Cabaret Voltaire (went on a retro kick), etc. (early 90's) -TO- haujobb, Lustmord, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Speedy J, Future Sounds of London, =B5-Ziq, Black Lung, Panacea, Photek, Panasonic, Mouse on Mars, etc. (mid-90's to present) Of course, this is omitting a great deal of music as I have over 700 cds, not to mention tapes and vinyl. I started with synth-pop and went on to electro-industrial, this eventually led me to have a huge interest in the progenitors of industrial (Throbbing Gristle, Coil and so forth). I also kept listening, with great interest, to post-industrial/electro-industrial. In 1994 I heard Aphex Twin for the first time ("At The Heart Of It All" - off NIN's "Further Down the Spiral") and became enthralled with this exciting genre called techno-ambient (or as its now called - IDM). I generally do not like hard beat, four on the floor techno, but prefer "Public Energy #1"-Speedy J type techno-ambient. The first album that really turned me onto IDM was "I Care Because You Do" by Aphex Twin. That album still to this day is one of my top 10 favorite albums (regardless of genre). Although I believe most of the more exciting music is made in the IDM-dark ambient-experimental (Brighter Death Now, Illusion of Safety!) genres I still like quite a few electro-industrial and original industrial artists. Anyway, let me know how you got here....=20 Oh, and I'm 25. I suppose this is a median age for IDM'ers? -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"
