Have you compared your 808 to Tom=E2=80=99s after the noise circuit was =
fixed? I=E2=80=99m thinking it might have been slowly dying before it =
totally disappeared.

By the way, one of the trim pots inside the 808 controls the amplitude =
of the noise source. It=E2=80=99s supposed to be dialed in to a specific =
voltage level as shown in the service manual, but who knows how many =
808s are actually calibrated correctly.

On a side note, the 6 cymbal oscillators have 2 tunable ones for the =
cowbell, with specific target frequencies listed in the service manual. =
Those could drift or be totally detuned on purpose.

I still use samples of his 808 all the time. I don't remember noticing =
differences among the other sounds really.

One sounded more fizzy while the other had more of a crack. Makes sense =
because the transistor was chosen for it's noise characteristics and the =
manufacturer improved it's noise issues over the years. They stopped =
making 808's because they couldn't source the noisyest transistors =
anymore. I remember the serials were far apart. Now my second 808 is a =
Miami and I still prefer the original 808 snare that cracks...Miami has =
a longer kick decay that I love in that box. Having access to toms, =
congas, maracas and claps all at the same time while jamming is a ton of =
fun.

I'm sure if I really started looking at waveforms there will be some =
slight variations in them all but those aren't noticeable to my ears as =
easily as the 808s.=20

Mine's nice and all, but... well it'd be nice to have a really cherry =
one. I know it won't be cheap. Any options out there?
