(idm) question about radio brodcasting

i know a lot of you brodcast on various stations, so i had a question for
you... please excuse the little IDM content...

my school currently has a radio station, but it is VERY poor - it's almost
impossible for people on campus, even in the dorm next to the tower, to recieve
the brodcast using a radio. (it's also brodcast on the school's cable channel,
but no one ever watches that...)

because of the lack of any brodcasting range we are not subject to FCC
regulation, nor do we really have anyone on campus that is serious about
wanting to be a DJ for the station (including me.) i've taken it upon myself
to see take a poll of current DJs and those that would be interested and
everyone agrees that an actual range would be helpful, and many more people
(especially people who want to go into radio as a profession) would be
interested in working for the school station.

the problem i'm having is i'm not exactly certain what would be involved in
getting a larger brodcasting range, how much it would cost the school, or what
kinds of FCC things we'd have to go through to do this. as it is most
communications majors don't bother trying to work at the station because it's
so useless, and i think that's really a bad choice on the school's part.

so if anyone knows what kind of equipment we'd need, very roughly what it would
cost (hundreds? thousands?) and what kind of hurdles the FCC makes you jump
over when setting up a real station, please email me privatly.

thanks for any help,
j.
