(idm) The Manchester connection

Can somebody enlighten me as to the relationship between Grand Central,
Fat City, and Rae & Christian? Specifically, are the first two indie
trip/hip hop labels from Manchester? And where do Mark Rae and Steve
Christian fit into this whole deal? Reason I ask is that I'm reviewing a
copy of their new CD "Northern Sulphuric Soul" that just came out domestic
(for US folks) on Smile (of all labels). Pleasantly surprised, trip/hop
hop with firm roots in funk and soul, a lot more to it than some other
formulaic 80 BPM head nodders I've heard as of late. Some of the cuts w/
vocals veer into diva/r&b territory (which I'd rather avoid) but the cuts
featuring Jeru and Jungle Bros. are pretty dope. It's not earth-shattering,
but has just the right touch of jazzy breakbeat action that folks into
MoWax, Compost, etc. might dig. So there's a review along with my query, I
suppose...
