Something like the Livid Instruments Builder Brain would support an 8x8 =
grid of toggle switches, but you would have to build the box, drill the =
holes, and wire up the toggle switches. The firmware allows =
configuration to any kind of control, and can save the setup so that you =
don=E2=80=99t need the software after you=E2=80=99re done.

I realize this isn=E2=80=99t an option for everyone, since it=E2=80=99s =
a real pain to build your own controller. Also, I think Livid =
Instruments is out of business, or at least the web site is very =
confusing.

There are other MIDI controller kits that would support the same.

Adding rotary switches and motorized faders would require custom =
firmware, though.
