(idm) MP3 and the Future of Music

Actually, perhaps instead of distributing music over the internet
through time-consuming and piracy-vulnerable mp3 downloads, companies
could charge $25 a pop for people ordering custom CD's burned for them.

Imagine this:

A web site where "X-Label" (let's say) allows users to enter in a
credit card number and assemble a short list of songs from the X-Label
back catalog they want put on a custom mix cd. The X-Label HQ has a server
with their entire catalog on it as mp3 files and one of those large CD-ROM
burners which holds 50 blank disks in a stack for small-scale mass
production.
When the user has finished entering their info, the CD is automatically
burned and the customer's address is printed on a sticker.
A pile of CDs and stickers accumulates each day. This pile is sorted
out by some flunky every morning who puts the CDs into packages, puts the
stickers on them, and mails them off to the customer.

This would be cool... for the label that is, not for us pirates;)
