::: RECORD OF THE WEEK ::: Artefactos De Dolor - La Ni=C3=B1a
Here's a secret we've been keeping from you since we had a few early =
copies delivered at the store a few weeks ago: the debut album by =
Artefactos de Dolor, a project by revered techno veterans Todd Sines =
(Interval, .xtrak) and Charles Noel (Interval, Archetyp) and Mexican =
singer and synth wizard Alyssa Barrera, who debuted on the Bunker New =
York imprint as LDY OSC two years ago. 'La Ni=C3=B1a' is a dark postwave =
album that's overflowing with gloomy industrial, EBM, postpunk, =
coldwave, darkwave, noise, no wave, techno and tape experimentation =
references, yet manages to sound unlike anything else out there, mostly =
due to its loose and improvisational character. Opener 'Al Rives' is the =
perfect example of Artefactos de Dolor's unique sound: otherworldly =
synth pulses, an ominous eighties darkwave bassline and a rambling =
rhythm guitar form the perfect backdrop for Barrera's tormented vocal =
experiments, all played without any intention to settle down in a =
conventional song. Interestingly enough it's that very unwillingness to =
settle down, a distinct feeling of unease running through the album that =
binds it all together, making it a perfectly coherent artistic =
statement.
A cold wind runs through the spooky 'Ritmo Primal', a key track on 'La =
Ni=C3=B1a' that has Barrera playing the pajaro tortuga, an ancient Mayan =
instrument giving the track a distinctively ritualistic feeling. Echoes =
of eighties tape wave clash with machines going haywire on '=C2=A1Animo!',=
while punching drums dominate the pseudo-psychedelic 'Medicina Una =
Retina'. Another standout track is the stuttering no wave experiment =
'237 Recibelo', before Artefactos de Dolor decides to leave all hints of =
song structure behind on '[cenote dos ojos]'. 'Murci=C3=A9lagos' ends =
the album exactly like the opening track starts - in reverse: it's a =
technoid darkwave track ending in a haze of synth experimentation, =
perfectly rounding off an album that's just as intriguing as it is =
challenging (RO).

track tape > 1/4=E2=80=9D stereo master > lacquer. It=E2=80=99s about as =
