here's what i thought was cool in '98... boards of canada-music has the right... no, it's not overrated. a nice change from all the clinical idm i'd been listening to. as few idm albums do, actually creates a 'space' you get to visit. grows on repeated listens. burger/ink-las vegas well, new to me this year. nice blend of minimalism and melody. has a unique warmth and texture i can't quite put my finger on. very european sounding. aemic-aleph 12"/chiris deluca-unknown 12" liked these better than all the funkstorung stuff they did together. i prefer the aemic at 33 1/3. scala-to you in alpha nothing can make up for the lack of seefeel, but...a very cinematic mood overall. i liked compass heart too (especially the track made from OMD-joan of arc samples). autechre-lp5 not my favorite autechre, but still damn good. if incunabula was the electro album, amber the melodic ambient album, tri repetae the mechanical album, and chiastic slide the crunchy album, then this is the experimental programming album. perhaps more contemporary electronic composition than just idm. oval-dok more mellow than before. perhaps sounding more like micorstoria than oval. i think he benefits from pulling his sound sources from someone else this time. the bell recordings give the record a unifying mood. non-idm stuff (no blurbs to save bandwidth) belle & sebastian-the boy with... craig armstrong-the space between us massive attack-mezzanine roddy frame-the narth star stephen duffy-i love my friends field mice-where'd you learn to kiss that way? trembling blue stars-lips that taste of tears durutti column-time was gigantic simon raymonde-blame someone else the hope blister-smile's ok his name is alive-ft. lake beautiful south-quench style council box set!!!! movies pi shakespeare in love your friends and neighbors books (didn't get enough reading done this year) girlfriend in a coma-douglas coupland excession (paperback)-iain m. banks most anticipated for '99 star wars episode 1: the phantom menace (if it sucks, my life has been a horrible joke) more autechre new david sylvian new pet shop boys (yes, you read it right) perhaps a funkstorung full length? new BOC liz fraser solo album new electronic album lilac time reunion (no joke!) ---------------------------------------------- D is for Desond thrown out of a sleigh ---------------------------------------------- bruce levenstein xxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxx.xxx ----------------------------------------------
