Moved by the texture of sound on this disc, I am compelled to praise the achievement of Shamen on "hempton manor", which apparently came out in 1996 on one little indian records ltd in england. This 59'15", 10 track diversion is a beautiful combination of 303 rhythm without the squinchy tonal content and real melodies on real synthesizers. It's unlike any of their other full-length CDs which I can barely tolerate. No trace anywhere of their better-silent rapper. Just plain, old techno, the kind of production up with which I always wished they would come. (Never, ever end a sentence with a proposition, thou robots of grammar.) The liner notes are printed on this rough, sturdy paper which is made from fibers of a plant they had back in the old days before American corporations had it outlawed to squash competition against their own, inferior products. For more information, see Shamen's web site at www.nemeton.com. To all the Cabaret Voltaire fans in the house: the 5-song remix EP included with early vinyl copies of "Groovy, Laidback and Nasty" represent some of Richard Kirk's peak techno moments, IMO. It stands out in stunning relief against his occasional waste productions. This EP is uncharacteristically not inconsistent. Mr. Gil xxx@xxxxx.xxx (L-zero-P-H-T) No authority is self-justified.
