My posts concerning the heap big beatdown Jega was getting were not specifically directed at any one person, except perhaps little miss trinitron. Uh... Just wanted to clear that up. There was some Bola slaggin' going on as well at the time, so that's how he ended up in there, because the criticisms directed at each artist were very similar in certain respects. I'm trying to say two things: one: I like Jega (duh!) and two: Because an album is a disappointment to you is no reason to lambast a producer's musical ethos or style. Criticizing something as "derivative" carries very little weight from my perspective because the amount of external influence detectable in a work of art is relative to the artist as well as the consumer. We may hear a great deal of similarity between two pieces of music that makes us think that the artist is blatantly ripping off somebody else, but for the artist, the music may either be an expansion on a theme they encountered in somebody else's work, a stylistic tribute to the original artist, or an entirely different work that coincidentally sounds very much like something else. Basically, if you want to bitch about BoC sounding like retro Ae wannabe cack, Jega ripping off Squarepusher and/or µ-ziq, and Bola sounding like old '93 style IDM, then you'd best be ready to ream out the Elecktroids as well. (note: if you didn't say these things, then don't assume I'm accusing you of doing so.) All art is derivative as well as our enjoyment of it. Let's try to ignore "hype" and artistic egoism and just discuss the tracks. Speakin' of tracks, you know who makes the best music out there? Tom Millar. I can listen to that guy's music all day. Sometimes subjectivity does get ridiculous... Tom P.S. I have my Aesthetics midterm next Tuesday, so please bear with me.
