There's a compilation that I reckon is really worthwhile called 'Best of
Electro' on Street Sounds. They had comps (just called 'Electro')
happening fairly contemporary to the whole explosion, and the "best of" is
a relatively recent cd release made up of tunes from these. A lot of the
stuff Andrew mentions. There's quite a bit of overlap between this and the
Mastersounds 'Classic Electro' album, which focusses on instrumental
versions, if that's your thing. It also has 'Planet Rock'.

For what happened next, which is where I'd put Mantronix - and some pretty
damn obscure, but really exciting stuff - try 'Beat Classic', a comp put
together by J Saul Kane (aka Octagon Man/Depth Charge). It puts his own
output to shame, IMO.
