(idm) Review: Lida Husik - Faith In Space

The new Lida Husik album, _Faith_In_Space_, is really another
collaboration with Beaumont Hannant, like _Husikesque_ was. It's a
little less ethereal than _Husikesque_ and more active, which I think is
a good thing. There's more variety on this one as well. "Blood And
Water" is an insistent little number, "New Miss NYC" is a real stomper,
even mildly clanky, while "Build A Fire" (no relation to the KLF track)
has a nice trip-hop-style flow to it. Admittedly, some of the music is
a little less interesting than it could be. For instance, "Bodies A
Model" is an average housey ditty, and "Ice It," while being a very nice
groove, just doesn't get exciting anywhere.

Husik's vocals are consistent throughout, and they complement this music
very well. I think she could do even better if the vocals had a little
more depth, but overall it works. The last track, a cover of the Jam's
"Monday," has a lot of vocal layering on top of heavy, spacey
instrumentation, and the effect is really nice.

If you can stand vocals with your IDM, I think this one's a keeper.
It's definitely worth a listen, at any rate.

Six-and-a-half out of ten.
