I had a Sovtek Big Muff Pi and ended up selling it because I didn't like it sounded with any of my synths. But I hadn't tried Tomislav's approach, which is really smart. I didn't like the ProCo Rat, either. I thought they were both too ugly sounding. I'd probably like them more, now. I like the Boss HM-2 because it can give a big, round boost, like a compressor; it has EQ to dial the bass in and keep it in; and it wildly accentuates the resonant frequency of the 303, making it sound like a nightmare beast on the attack. You can be a little subtle with it, but it works best "dimed" - everything up to 10. I always liked the sound on the Cluster label (the UK label, not the German band, which I like, too), e.g. D.A.V.E. the Drummer and Chris Liberator, and I felt the HM-2 got me that powerful sound. I thought it sounded a bit like Hardfloor, too, but I think they actually used a Rat. No google was used in the making of this post, so I might have my facts wro= ng :) On Tue, Mar 19, 2019 at 9:13 PM Eric Wood <xxxx.xxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx> wrote: > > I was wondering if anyone was using the Big Muff > > On Mar 19, 2019, at 6:51 PM, Tomislav Babic <xxxxxxxx.xxxxx@xxxxx.xxx> wr= ote: > > yes splitting the signal, and mixing little bit of dry under the overdri= ven component. > even better if you lowpass the dry with gentle slope like 12 or 6dB/oct = starting as low as 150 Hz , plus minus. > > i use DI box for split; thru goes to the pedal (MXR Dist+ custom shop, Ir= on Ether Oxide or one of my Big Muffs) > and xlr is fed to a mic pre input. lowpass i do in daw. > > that said, i find thi necessary once in a blue moon - it depends on the r= ole of 303 or similar synth will have in > the arrangement. for low bass i dont like drive, or resonance. however f= or that hardcore "mid bass" range > where it slaps you silly, sometimes you want that overdriven bass ligh= t sound. specially if another 303, > or sh2 or something is doing the low bass beneath. so they each have bre= athing space. > > its been a while since i sold my 303 but i still use the same wet/dry teh= nique with sh2, sh101 and sys100. > > PS on a related note, i have had a RE303 built recently, and i am sorry t= o admit it sounds nothing like the 303. > we have done direct a/b and its rather dissapointing. i am pissed off = for time and energy i have spent into > this wild goose chase. > > > > On Tue, Mar 19, 2019 at 11:13 PM Paco deBongo <xxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx> wro= te: >> >> BTW--just from casual observation--I'm pretty sure that the devilfish wi= ll lose the bottom end too w/ its built in overdrive--It is a nice overdriv= e, but none that I have encounter are perfect--I don't think there's anyway= around losing the bottom--shy of splitting the signal and mixing it wet/dr= y--or having two acid boxes...Maybe run overdrive thru just the mixer and t= hen compress the signal back down? >> >> I was wondering if a bass overdrive might be the ticket? >> >> Any one here design an overdrive circuit?
