Nicer? =E2=80=A6 or just closer to a piano?

For those of us who never studied piano, piano action is not nicer. It =
might be familiar for those who play a different instrument, but I =
prefer to consider the synthesizer as its own instrument. Some amount of =
weighting is crucial, just for the ergonomics of playing an instrument =
that responds well, physically, but in my opinion the piano suffers from =
its purely mechanic heritage. I=E2=80=99m not saying that people can=E2=80=
=99t get around the limitations of piano action and then even learn to =
prefer it, but without the prior bias I don=E2=80=99t think a synthesist =
would naturally choose piano action.

=E2=80=A6 or did you mean nicer just because it has an extra octave or =
so of keys?

current manufacturer of poly aftertouch?

To my knowledge, Ensoniq was the last (and only?) manufacturer to build =
poly aftertouch keyboards on a large scale. That=E2=80=99s quite =
significant, since basically all synths are manufactured with a keybed =
from a third party. There have been other polyphonic keyboards, but I =
don=E2=80=99t get the impression that any of them sold in very high =
quantities.

There may be a modern poly aftertouch keyboard being made - and I forget =
the brand - but my impression is that they=E2=80=99re far from mass =
production. Maybe this is the VAX MIDI keyboard?

Anyway, I once requested a =E2=80=9CList of synths that respond to =
Polyphonic Aftertouch=E2=80=9D and the two responses that came through =
only listed a total of two synths. It would be nice to see a =E2=80=9CList=
of synths throughout history with Poly AT keyboards."

I sure hope that the Prophet XL responds to MIDI polyphonic aftertouch =
already. It=E2=80=99s been part of the MIDI standard since the =
beginning. In addition, I don=E2=80=99t think there=E2=80=99s much about =
MPE that a three-decade-old MIDI synth wouldn=E2=80=99t be able to =
handle out of the box, assuming you=E2=80=99re willing to open the =
manual and make a few settings. New synths might not be marked with =
=E2=80=9CMPE=E2=80=9D but you should be able to get everything working =
with some reading and configuration.
