I'm of mixed minds about the WuRemix. On one hand, I like the sheer
destructive qualities of the mix. But on the other, I don't think
FunkStorung have any real clue about the track's structure. They mangle
it, but don't resussitate the corpse in any particular way. It just lies
there, all bloody, funkless, smelly. Still, quite a spectacular
corpse if that's what your after.
I just don't think it offers any particular insights into a
possible meeting of "IDM" and hip-hop. Without funk or any room for rap,
what's the point? Plus, Timbaland has already solved the problem in a
much more satisfactory way. I haven't heard it myself, but my friend
tells me that on his latest Ginuwine instrumental, he samples Nitzer Ebb,
Caberet Voltaire and Godzilla. And it's a hit single. I mean, hot damn!
