Ha! I wish I knew how to made a good FM patch. Only made 1 that I liked, and = it was an accident. Sounded like a violin note with bow bounce. As for Phase Distortion, I can only guess that it=E2=80=99s Phase = Modulation. But I know nothing about it beyond writing a random patch = generator for the CZ-101 from a custom Apple ][ MIDI interface. Interestingly, there is a lot in common between Phase and Frequency = Modulation, at least in some areas. Phase Locked Loops are used to match = the frequency of an oscillator to an incoming signal, but what they=E2=80=99= re really doing is matching the Phase. The process of matching phase = ends up matching the frequency, too. I=E2=80=99m not sure how that might = be related to PM or PD. In classic radio modulation, you have AM, FM, and PM as options, = although the latter is almost unheard of. In other words, you can change = the Amplitude, Frequency, or Phase of a carrier signal. As for how this = relates to synthesis, your guess is as good as mine. I think Seth has a good point: Editing a patch on a Casio CZ synth is a = lot closer to normal synth patch editing, and thus significantly easier = than editing a Yamaha DX synth patch.
