I have three different MobileIO FireWire interfaces plus a couple of = ADAT converters. Each MIO interface has 8 analog inputs plus 8 digital = inputs via ADAT. I have the ULN-2, 2882, and LIO-8 plus an ADA-8000 and = a Focusrite Octopre (actually, the LIO-8 doesn=E2=80=99t have ADAT, but = instead has 4 stereo AES3 inputs). There are plenty of outputs for = monitoring and effects. You can build very high channel counts by = combining these interfaces, which each handle 18 to 20 input channels = and 18 to 20 output channels. I have some in a portable rack and some in = my studio rack. For the human interface, I have a Mackie MCU Pro control surface which = is integrated with the MIO Console mixing and recording software. You = can build mono, stereo, quad, surround or any mixer combination. MIO = Console allows pre- and post-sends on every channel and bus for flexible = recording. The MobileIO hardware also has on-board DSP for effects. I = use those for bass management of outputs as well as simple mixer EQ or = other basic effects on inputs and busses. You can even apply selective = dither to approximate your final mastered sound while tracking live. The MCU Pro is actually great for both live venue and studio setups. It = allows hands-on operation, and the LCD displays give instant channel = names as you move around from the main mix to the bus, monitor, and = effects mixes. I=E2=80=99ve got a 16-channel stage box on a 100-foot = snake that works both remove and in the studio (although the excess = snake is a tripping hazard when coiled in the studio). I find that the MCU Pro and MIO Console combination are great, because = you can assign a single fader to a stereo (or multichannel) source, = unlike an analog mixer where faders are usually dedicated to mono = channels and even when they=E2=80=99re stereo they=E2=80=99re still = dedicated and not flexible. The MCU Pro might seem limited, at first, = because of the 8 channels, but I found that being able to create just = the faders I need is far more powerful than having a larger mixer with = faders that often sit idle - not to mention the extreme desk space = required. The MCU Pro can be expanded to 32 faders, but so far I = haven=E2=80=99t wanted to trade the space. Between custom fader = assignments per project and the ability to page or scroll through = channels, I haven=E2=80=99t found the need for more physical faders. = Besides, I=E2=80=99ve mounted the MCU Pro on a tilted TAMA drum stand, = and that way it doesn=E2=80=99t actually take up *any* desk space. I believe that hands-on control is most important, but I don=E2=80=99t = believe that this prevents you from taking advantage of working in the = box (whether that be the computer or the dedicated DSP in the MIO = interfaces).
