<< To continue in this general audio vicinity, Squarepusher's previous two releases (_Music is Rotted ..._ and _Budakhan Mindphone_) strike me as better and better and more and more developed each time I listen to them. The early criticism of these strikes me as hasty (of course, I listen to these two mostly as background music, so maybe that's why I like them). >> Speaking generally...it's very easy to rush to judgment on any new release, particularly if expectations are high. And it's tempting to be the first kid on the block to review something new, even if you haven't listened to it enough (and when many cd's have 17 tracks, it can be hard to get through them all). If you've listened well to something five times and it still sucks, then slag it. But, in reference to the Grower concept recently discussed, some music sounds better each successive time you hear it...especially once you can get over your initial expectations about what the music *should* sound like and start listening to what it *does* sound like. Not always easy, but it can be rewarding. The alternative: go out and blow a stack o' cash on more new music, instead of re-listening to any of last month's stuff more than two or three times. - Fred http://www.thelocus.com/kumquat np: funky derrick, boogie dawn
