I've always found that the most innovative music comes from musicians
who mix musical styles completely ie:FSOL/Download/DJ Spooky/Orb/PWEI?
, people who aren't nailed down to what 'techno' is or isn't and just
explore it makes things sooo interesting and unexpected. I consider
these bands to be IDM but completely different than say Autechre or
Aphex(aside from the fact that Download has sampled Autechre!) And I
must say no better or worse either, but you always know what you are
getting with an Autechre or Black Dog album and not so much with the
above bands I've mentioned..One of the best albums of the year to me has
been Paul D. Miller(Dj Spooky) 'Viral Sonata' pure genius.
My 2 cents.
