>I've just moved to Philadelphia and am looking for info on IDM-friendly shops, >events, clubs, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated. > >Thanks >Geordan i just got into a small discussion with someone about philly's [lack of a] scene, but there are a few redeeming things... chris' guide to philly v0.1 ----- Spaceboy Records 407 South Street actually the second floor of Zipperhead (ska/punk/bondage shop) decent selection, but they seem to under-order on the new stuff. my fave place to get discs in philly. the staff is helpful to an extreme. a few weeks ago a friend and i went in there and we pulled out a large stack of cd's to listen to. the owner pulled out some stools and set up a fan by the listening station to keep us cool. the only shop with vinyl of these. gotta go there. State of the Art 638 South Street good selection, but the prices could make you cringe. you can get it cheaper from bentcrayon. [john, that's a plug...] idm/electronic/hiphop section is all the way in the back of the store. staff generally knows what they're talking about, tho' they were one of the annoying crew that genuinely thought they knew how sqpshr's 'music is rotted one note' SHOULD be written [music is one note rotting ?!?!?] Repo Records uhhh...on the opposite side of the street from Spaceboy, between there and State of the Art good selection, good prices, but if you're not there to buy stuff from the ska/alternative/shoegazer section of the store, don't bother asking a question. they'll give you this doe-eyed look that'll cause immediate reminiscing about Bambi. not to great on re-ordering stuff they go out-of-stock on. Digital Underground On 5th street, north of South St., next to a decent restaurant named Tiramisu. The ultimate place for industrial music of all flavors, but they have a decent selection of idm mainstays (ae, aphext, orb, sqrpshr...) staff's cool as shit and if they don't have it they won't hesitate to order it. as fas as other stuff, there's a bar/diner called Silk City at 5th and Spring Garden (don't call it a club) that has a few dj's in regularly. there's a duo that puts on a decent show called "magnetique" on monday nights. one guy spins 'french' sounding stuff, the other spins d'n'b. this place was the sight of the soundboy yakuza tour in philly. there's another club just south of South st. that has gone through many name changes so I can't remember it's current incarnation, but the weekly show is called Liquid. sometimes good, sometimes bad. take it or leave it. hope this helps chris
