Most small indies do about 1000 records....and u really cant make much money off of that.....let alone get a distributor to take em....unless yer item is HOT. If your doing break beat,,,,jungle ..or any kind of D&B and u live in the states.....the time is NOW to get that record out,,,,,,,distributors in the past have been *wishy-washy* about picking up any kind of techno/acid ..shit like that,.,,,,,but when it comes to jungle and d&b....they WILL take it,,,,its a big trend now.... we have had no trubble selling out of 500-1000 (break-beaty jungle type stuff records in about 2-3 weeks...but make sure u get about 50 test pressings to send out to distibutors and mags....... as far as pressers....in the states: we have used ERIKA in Calf. u can get shit in about 2 weeks......and thats fast fast fast,,,,,,,,the record quality is nice and thick....sound is pretty good.,,,,, All the places in Nashville r cheap but they suck (IMHO) So all you LABEL MAVENS out there, can you recommend a good place to go for pressing? Rainbow in calf is good they do all the big label hip hop and alternative....but lead time is like 6-8 weeks or longer......thats why I like ERIKA. the next place im going is RTI in California ......(the next artist we putting out is asking for it (one of those WIRE reading nerds ;) ) it....but how can u blame him......the quality is superb,,,,not yer average dj wax...this is the stuff they do those Calssical LP's on......... Steve Albini gets his Shelac records pressed at the place..and ive never met anyone as anal as him......BUT his production is flawless,,,,,,and if u ever talk to him shes knowledgeable as all hell.... Just so you don't bite my idea, my label will be called WARNING LABEL. All graphics will be in safety orange and black, and the label logo will be the international symbol for warning, an exclamation point inside a black triangle. >> remember the more colors u use the more expensive the labels r .......jackets r a whole diffrent story,,,,,,,,u can just do plain white labels with somthing like a sticker (wich i think is the way to go,,,,,) or u can spend up to .85 cents each on letterpressed envelope style jackets,,,,,, this is what we do....for some of our more limmited projects,,,,,,,we use fireproof press in chicago.,...and they HAND press on old old old printing presses the jackets....and they all look diffrent,.,,,,,very very nice stuff,,,, for more details on the printing process see our web page we also have a link to fireproof, www.eshark.com/kultbox so for 500-1000 white lables plan on spending about 1800-2000 when all is said and done for a quailty product.... also check out chris sattingers web site on hyperreal,,,,,this has a weath of information....also order the book ....(it slips my mind) but its somthing by tim sweeney,...on independent records real good book...... good luck..you'll have fun.....and meet cool people ...and do somthing yourself,,,, to quote the Underground Resistance: "FUCK THE MAJORS" Robbi kultbox records/ill state distribution chicago usa.
