Here is a quick take on DJ Spooky's Detroit appearance last night. Very different than the last tour - he is now supported by a band! The instrumentation is: keyboards, DJ, drummer, tabla player, MC, and Spooky on stand-up bass, mic or decks. All material was (per Spooky) from "Riddim Warfare", w/alot of improv jamming: Skooky would cue and cut off solos and wrap up the songs. At times it was right on (tight), other times a little shakey - but this is still early in the tour. The music had a very live feel - definately not over polished or sounding 'just out of the box'. He finished the show with a five minute bass solo. Spooky kept a lively banter with the small crowd, talked about the "212" scene and mentioned "that detroit-electro", and that the show was "abstact". He validated both the people sitting on the floor and the people dancing. Open acts were Plasticina Mosh, a mexican funk(tehano?) band and video-pieces by Emergency Broadcast Network (no tele-podium). -- =eric=korsedal=
