saw the following show last night in LA: Lexaunculpt, Electric Company, George Sarah (T.H.C.), Mike Fonte, Ray Makers, Daniel Bremmer. 8PM. Tickets via Ticketmaster. Troubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Blvd. 310.276.6168 brock gave some glowing reviews of lexaunculpt -- all of which i agree with IN A BIG WAY. something i notcied about the performance is that alex/lexaunculpt is moving to a much "smoother" style .. at least in the new material he played last night.. while i much enjoy the edgyness of his material, some of the more flowing moments were welcome as well. very groovy, solid stuff!! where brock and i differ in opinion (imagine that!:) of course is on the rest of the show. which is all good, 'cus none of us kids around here can ever seem to agree on any dj/song/performance/band/boy/girl/party/hamster/whatever. (well, except for maybe lexaunculpt). Electric Company: OH MY GOD what a wonderful performance. I am not sure what was in the water that night, but brad laner and friend (who was that guy?) threw down a set that also flowed so much more smoothly than previous performances i have seen. brad brought along his guitar -- whcih he really worked into the music quite nicely. between the guitar , the odd rhytmic flow (almost 4-on-the-floor in feel for the most part), and the tiny bits of vocals and sampling, the set really sounded like a swans or sonic youth performance run through a chain reaction/pan_sonic filter. if that makes sense. it was good, gritty, groovy, dark, and raw! Ray Makers: eh. I was told the sound like mouse on mars. whatever. they were cool if youre into the whole indy-rock-gone-techno-star thing, which i am really not. but my friend who is really into the darla style at the moment enjoyed them quite a bit -- so i'll just pass this one off as "not my thing, and not like mouse on mars" :) they were quite nice though. thc (well, george sarah and company): im not into the whole vocal thing george has going with the band at the moment. i love vocals (check out voices in my lunchbox for good stuff!!!!), but these just do not cut it for me. for whatever reason, the girls voice brings images of a.morrisette or the cranberries to mind. i like the string section though, and thought the music otherwise, if not super original and awe inspiring, was quite nice. i like the fact half the set was without vocals. the glass is half full! whoever the other band was: odd to see such a "rock band" on the bill -- but they had some good songs going on -- one of which reminded me a little of low... perhaps it was the vocals? was nice. thats all! chris. music, four lunchpails: wednesdays 7-9pm kuci 88.9fm www.kuci.org "Nope.
