(idm) Godspeed You Black Emperor!/Fridge live review

Bit of confusion over how to actually enter the venue owing to
building work. Quite a big turnout.

Fridge only performed 4/5 songs, the first few being tinkly
keyboard numbers with one long bass/guitar drone-r at the end.
Much preferred this truncated set to the longer recent one.

I'd only heard one song by Godspeed... previously, on Mixing It,
before the inexplicable decision to move it to Saturday night,
but that was enough to make me think I shouldn't miss the
opportunity.

Haven't seen many nine-piece bands before, but I agreed with the
overheard comment to the record label vendor at the end that it
was the "best gig of the year". Longer than that, actually.

Great, sweeping songs, epic without being melodramatic or turgid,
at other times small and fragile. Sadly some idiots were talking
all the way through, making it more difficult to appreciate the
quieter passages.

I think there are a couple of dates left in the UK, don't know
about elsewhere.

Very highly recommended.
