I think listening to Coltrane records from the different phases of his career (at least 4) is almost like listening to a different musician. I know plenty of people who only care for his hard-bop stuff or only his free stuff, etc.. Whatever record you get will only be indicative of where he was at for 3-4 years. It might be best to check out a record from each phase. Maybe: Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane Giant Steps A Love Supreme or the Live At The Village Vanguard set Sun Ship - this is really a transitional record between the modal & free periods, but it's probably my favorite Coltrane record so I couldn't resist.
