allow me to support this thread by stating that everyone on this list should _at least_ be familiar with Raymond Scott and even better include some of his work in their collection. Raymond Scott was a pioneer, in both composition and production, inventing new approaches to both. he was also an true 'expert knob twiddler,' building machines and instruments analog-style to create the sounds and effects heard in his head, a demanding process that most of us take for granted today thanks to the digital era. for those unfamiliar with Scott, the easiest connection would be through the music of the Warner Brothers cartoons of the Fifties. those scores were done by Carl Stalling, who in turn appropriated Scott's 'dinner music for a pack of hungry cannibals' and 'manhattan minuet,' among others, which Scott had recorded in the Thirties. while those pieces leaned more to the jazz side of the scale and utilized a full orchestra and natural instruments, the Baby is series is ambient in nature, was recorded in the Sixties and features Scott manipulating the electronic instruments he had created. the Baby series is light and playful in nature, but for the uninitiated might be little difficult at first. they can be a bit tedious at points, but anyone with a broad musical perspective (like our friends ernie and kent) will certainly derive pleasure from these recordings. sh*t, they're over thirty years old and still sound fresh. ambient before eno even got started. check out the official site at http://members.aol.com/DevilDrums and mail Irwin Chusid (Scott archives director) at xxxxxxxx@xx.xxxxxx.xxx if you have questions. he's quite helpful and approachable. and if you're serious, get on the mailing as there are some key, kick-ass reissues coming this fall. and you can buy the Baby series straight through the archive at a reduced price. > From: ChairCrusher <xxxx@xxxxxx.xxx> > > Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" is a truly amazing set of recordings > which I HIGHLY recommend.
