interesting how many young, upstart labels are rediscovering the 7-inch
format. v/vm, mego, suction, skam, diskono, and now the tom label have all
turned to 7-inches either for one-off releases or for whole series. in
america, the 7-inch is the quintessential emblem of independence from the
"mainstream" record industry, the clearest statement of a decision to
attempt to operate and survive outside of that industry's profit-first
logic. i can't say for sure that that's what's happening here -- it's a
cheap format, and that's probably the ultimate impetus in both cases -- but
it's at least interesting to watch the associations mutate from decidedly
rock origins (at least in america) and into abstract electronic music.
