You are right from your (and my) point of view; I was in the eighties 
deep into "black" dance music, which featured the 808 very often quite 
prominently.

But you have to imagine the experience, which a japanese electronic 
engineer could have: home organs for happilly grinning families in 
adverts and hotel lounge background music while joining an international 
tech conference. Maybe our engineer listened to Whitney Houston or even 
early Detroit Sound privately, but the public music experience was far 
away from a genre, which used a 808 in the mid eighties.
