After long thought and web crawl, I am considering a Frostwave filter
instead of a MS10/20.

Well everyone knows i kant keep my mouth shut so here goes..
The first thing you have to consider/take into account what you want to do
with the "MS-20" sound. The Frostwave is a HP/LP filter. The MS-20 is a
patchable synth with alot more going on than just a filter. The Frostwave
sells for well under $200 usd (email paul perry for prices, im not his bitch
;) The MS-20 goes for $550-$800 on the used market. Thats *alot* of money
for a plastic synth, with age-ing power supplies (they have been know to blow
up fall off the case inside the unit melt PCB's (read the old school AH
archives it goes into this in *detail*) Most of the MS-20's i see have rust
and oxidation on the jacks, cigarette burns on the top (the MS-20 just
"rules" for putting an ashtry on top ;)

When and if you do buy and ms-20 the first thing you will want to do is take
off the side pannels...they are just held together by some thread
cutters...look for oxidation (rust on the metal) tons of MS-20's are getting
rusty now n days.
Is all of this cosmetic crap a big deal? Well to me if you are working your
ass off in some office/construction site/university whatever..i think you
should get the best *value* for your money. Paying $700 for an "ok" MS-20
that may require additional care and service in the short term may not be a
smart move ...but only you can decide this.

Now.......im not slagging the MS-20 ...they rule. I ve had them in the
past....and sold them when i wanted somthing else. Id like to get another
one if its minty....i dont want to have to worry about servicing things like
jacks.........so if anyone has a nice one for sale/trade drop me a line ;)

Back to the Frostwave......
If your main objective for wanting an MS-20 is to process sounds thru the
filter...get a Frostwave, they do sound wonderful. Does it sound *exactly*
like an MS-20? Well im not gonna get into it...every MS-20 i have ever heard
sounds diffrent. If heard some very good sounding MS-20's that scream and
have wierd character and others that were nice.....but alittle um......i
donno...(maybe they were out of tune? or in tune;)

The Frostwave is built like a TANK. ALL METAL. Very very well made.
The frostwave is built in "STOMP BOX" table top form. This is a HUGE plus for
people who work in the "MODULAR" studio format. Yes boys and girls i love
stomp boxes and i will buy ever one that sounds good.

Stomp Boxes or "individual modular table top boxes" Are awsome. This is
somthing that Paul Perry and Bob Moog understand! Bob Moog is a smart man of
selling his new MOOGERFOOGERS in stomp box format. Why? Well....modulars are
used as sound manglers......and i hate them in a rack....
Right now i have a frostwave Ring Mod on top of a Juno 106, A frostwave
filter next 2 a SH101...A Frostwave Funk a Duck next to a drum machine....
And when i want to change my set-up around i just take the BOX and set it
next 2 the peice.....When i want to go out and play...i dont have to bring a
huge modular system..i can just bring a Ring Mod and a Filter...and im set!

Paul and Mr, Moog understand this being business men also. Bob knows he
can't sell everyone a "modular system" BUT he does know he can sell
filter/ring mod boxes to *everyone* ALMOST everyone WILL spend $200-300 on a
good individual box.

I wish people like Paul S. and Blacet would have this option, and i think
they should really look into it. I would ***kill*** to have a dark star
chaos in an individual box (or a duel dark star ;) I **HATE** bringing the
dark star out of the studio for projects becuase its in a 3u 19 inch rack.
(but i do anyway cuz the thing sounds so good) This also prevented me from
getting a dark star for along time. I didnt have any Doepfer stuff...so i
didnt have a place for it....id have to think about making a "custom"
box......putting it somewhere....blah blah blah....i dont have time for all
that....im buzy...i just want to plug it in and make music...i dont want to
have to spend all my time thinking about building a box.......or fitting it
into somthing..blah blah....

I ended up...waiting a LONG time..saving the money up for 3 blacet modulas
and a rack that cost me over $500. And its a pain in the ass to move the rack
around..... I would have spent my money with him way faster if he sold
individual boxes,,,for like $200/$300. I think you can sell more product
that way,,,,,everyone will buy one.......Bob Moog knows this...and thus the
"Moogerfooger" wonderful idea.....they are a "hit" Guitar players and
everyone buy them cuz they are "easily integrated" into any studio/live
format.

Can anyone offer opinions regarding this? Is the frostwave the best of the
filters?
