Very very few synths have balanced outputs. Memorymoog and Polymoog are the only two Moog synths I can think of. None of the Oberheims. JP8 had balanced XLR outputs, not many other Rolands. Hard pressed to think of any Yamaha or Korg synths either. Note that XLR jacks do NOT automatically imply balanced I/O. Even some pro audio gear - like the Drawmer DS201 dual gate - do NOT have balanced I/O despite the XLR jacks. With the exception of the Chroma, all the ARP keyboards had unbalanced outputs - even those with XLR jacks! Moogerfooger I/O are unbalanced. Frankly synth outputs are so hot that balanced output is not needed. Balanced outputs are best applied with really low level devices like microphones and any instrument with magnetic pickups. What you REALLY need to pay attention to is all devices having the same dB system. Mixing +4dBu and (-)10dBv devices is a PITA. I love using the Korg SDD-3300 digital effects with my synths, but mixing a +4dBu synth with a (-)10dBv Korg SDD-3300 results in an input that is so hot that a slight nudge on the input control dramatically changes the level, and (-)10dBv output that is too low for my +4dBu line mixer. I'm about to modify the 3300 to +4dBu I/O levels. Sent from my iDifferentialOutputStage, MC
