I once had the opportunity to patch up my polymoog mellotron male choir sound on a polymoog that was sitting right next to a real mellotron about 20+ years ago. The overall timbre was quite close. As somebody there pointed out, if it were thrown into a mix, it might pass as a real mellotron. As for the vox humana preset on the polymoog keyboard, that never sounded very convincing to me. For years I thought that sound in Gary Numan's main hit were strings. The synths you mentioned will generally only give very poor synthetic imitations. Mark Smart's page gives some better information, which is the typical 3 bandpass filter method. Though he gives one lower formant, and two higher, while others give two lower and one higher. It just goes to show you that 4 bandpass filters are better still. Or a whole vocoder style fixed filter bank. Or several methods combined including the above plus EQ and secret programming techniques. The reason I mention all this is by coincidence I'm currently working synthesized vocal sounds. Following are a couple of mp3 examples of some preliminary work. Normally I wasn't going to post any more audio files to this list, but the dotcom list was just shut down. So all those with the typical hair trigger response to name any synth sound cheesy if it doesn't sound like a synth can refrain from listening and move on. Heavenly female voice without vibrato synthesized on the motm modular synthesizer ontop of a recording of a real string orchestra and a couple of Doepfer synthesized male bass voices. Best if heard through high quality headphones. filesize: 913K http://home.att.net/~elhardt2/MOTM_Female_Voice.mp3 Full male/female Tomita mellotron like chorus, some voices Doepfer, some MOTM. The individual voices were clearer before all being combined. I'm still working on better clarity and realism. filesize: 226K http://home.att.net/~elhardt2/Male_Female_Chorus.mp3 -Elhardt
