Most songs have many layers of sound that overlap. Most songs vary only words, and repeat these layers over and over exactly the same. Good songs vary each layer of sound over the course of the song. That is, the rhythm may change or the harmony between the different layers might change, or one of the layers of sound may fade out to give way to another one. Sometimes this is barely noticable unless you listen for it, and can discern a background sound going on in the background of a more noticable layer. Anyway, minimalist music to me only has one or a few layers of sound. It puts a lot more strain on the overall composition and sonic qualities of the song, since there's only those few layers to listen to. I think a good minimalist song stands well on its own but would also be a solid base to a "regular" song. PS, all that aside, I just listen to music and either like it or don't. I really don't like academic discussions of artwork, but hey, someone asked... =) - Bobby
