Low
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secret Name- Release Date March 29.
Perhaps it is best to describe Low's approach as
essentialism- allowing each musical gesture to make
maximum impact. When Zak Sally touches his bass
guitar, Alan Sparhawk plays a guitar chord, or Mimi
Parker strikes a cymbal, it is with an intent and aim
to connect with the listener. This is their fifth
studio album and their first full length release for
kranky.

In November, 1998, Low came to Chicago to record with
Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios. Having
defined and refined a sound all their own, the trio
continue to improve their craft and expand their
range. From the release of their Songs For A Dead
Pilot EP to the fall of 1998, Low had written a
fistful of songs. The new album develops each of the
directions Low explored on the Songs EP; working
between blurry drones and chamber pop. "Will The
Night," the first track on the EP, even gets reworked
on Secret Name. During recording, Low worked with a
string section, timpani, and piano.

Low remains tied to the simple grace of the voices
Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. Instrumentally they
have stretched out, but each song continues to be
based on deceptively simple patters of voice, bass,
guitar, and skeletal percussion. Low have crafted a
diverse and absorbing album that will surprise
longtime listeners and new fans alike.
