Thanks to everyone who voiced an opinion on this. I got a kick out of all the metaphors, geez, some of you guys should be writing ad copy... Anyway, yesterday I ordered a big pile of MOTM kits. As has been stated many times on this list, Paul Schreiber is a great to do business with, he took a lot of time out of his day to answer my questions over the phone, and struck me as a totally committed and brilliant synth designer. I really look forward to building his kits. It was interesting, most of the response I got from my original post was from MOTM owners, nobody advised me to go with the Nord. Not that that was all that made my decision, but it does show how satisfied Paul's customers are. I mainly decided to go with the MOTM modules over the Nord for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I'm only using Mac's, and it seems that getting the Nord to run under emulation is not a particularly easy task, and I have no space to bring another computer into the studio. Next summer, if and when the Mac editor is available, I might reconsider, but for now, this is a big negative for the Nord. Another point is that I think that there's something more that can be done with the DSP power we have right now than emulate analog models. I'm no analog purist, I have as much digital gear as analog, the DX-7 is the synth I probably understand the deepest, and I have nothing against digital sounds. In fact, I probably understand DSP stuff better than I do analog circuitry, I could probably code a DSP oscillator, but there's no way I could design an analog osc. That's part of the reason I'm getting the MOTM, to learn more about analogs. I've been using MAX for years, and recently got David Zicarelli's MSP audio extensions. While MAX/MSP is probably way less intuitive than the Nord, and is also tied to the computer, it seems like a more open space for developing new sounds than the Nord. Anyway, thanks again to everyone who wrote, and I think I'll be spending the next few weeks hunched over my soldering iron... ________________________________________________________ Dave Trenkel : xxxxxx@xxxx.xxx : www.peak.org/~improv/ "...there will come a day when you won't have to use gasoline. You'd simply take a cassette and put it in your car, let it run. You'd have to have the proper type of music. Like you take two sticks, put 'em together, make fire. You take some notes and rub 'em together - dum, dum, dum, dum - fire, cosmic fire." -Sun Ra ________________________________________________________
