this is my ever so exciting review from last night's show in LA with
funkstorung, phoenecia, lexaunculpt, stewart walker, j bondy.
arnt you excited?

last night i went to the public space 5 year anniversary party. it was
pretty damn cool.

promoters: public space, green galactic.
i could go on for hours on how much i love lynn et al. at public
space/green galactic. they have brought out some of the best acts ever to
come to southern california and hosted some of the best shows: chain
reaction/pole, low res, phthalocyanine, shake, john tejada, autechre
(though i was NOT at this, and still to this day kick myself for being too
good of a student and staying home to finish a paper:), ultra red, alec
empire (okay, so i didnt like mr empire, but to some folks this was a nice
thing, and its good to get such artists out here ), richie devine,
phoenecia, lexaunculpt and so many many more!

venue: el rey.
this is the nicest venue and it is ALWAYS nice to see shows there. some
of the most memorable shows for me have occurred at the el rey (mouse on
mars/stereolab, pole/chain reaction kids, love spirals downwards, etc.).
everytime i have gone to the el rey, the sound has been nothing short of
great, and last night was certainly no exception.

crowd: !
there was one! more people than i thought... everyone was chill and
groovy and many a people danced, even when the music was not
conventionally all that dance-able !!! :).

performances: j bondy (dj), lexaunculpt, stewart walker, phoenecia,
funkstorung

j bondy's dj set was quite nice and had a groovy electro edge that hit the
spot for me! but then again, j always puts together groovy sets and
remains one of my favorite djs, locally and otherwise. groovy, dancey
stuff thats fun and interesting.

lexaunculpt: what can i say about alex that has not been said 1000 times
before. the set was great, one of the best i have seen, though i think
it's unfair to compare, because i am used to seeing this boy on ghetto
sound systems. there is so much going on in his music that it was great
to hear everything so loud and clean. it was neat to see so many people
into his set.

stewart walker: let me start by saying I LIKE MINIMAL music. and this
was minimal. minimal beats that traveled through house (though on the dub
tip!), electro, techno, and i s'pose hip hop. the set was quite nice,
groovy and at points, pretty dark. i look forward to hear what stewart
walker has coming out in mille plateaux. a lot of people i know were
bored by this. but they are not all that into minimal music; the few of
us that are ate it up!

phoenecia: oh my fucking god i loved this. not as funky as when i saw
them play LA as soul oddity (which was great as well!) and a thousand
times more impressive than last time they were here in so-cal as
phoenecia. the set was very aggressive, very harsh, and seemingly raw.
lots of tweeking going on in them music. this set was the BEST proof that
phoenecia are NOT autechre rip offs; speaking of which:

funkstorung: i just wanted to see autechre the whole time. i cant help
it. i enjoyed the set, especially the first portion (they took several
small breaks in sound) - but really, it just depressed me that i missed
autechre last time they were here in LA. i think my biggest complaint is
there was NO fun element in their music during the set, something i LOVE
about the remixes they do.

i guess thats all!
thanks to everyone involved in this great show!
