(idm) ramblings on live photek/ninjas/aux88

Rambling impressions of some acts i've caught over the last couple
weeks:

A week or so back, I saw photek at metro in chicago. Opening acts
included DJ? Accucrack, who i really enjoy, it is a side project of
the industrial band Accumen Nation. They have the driving energy
and heaviness of industrial, with the pacing of techno. The other
two djs were really boring to me(I need some jazziness or somthing
with my d&b - plus i was visiting friends so literally sat these
sets out). Then came photek. A guy was toasting: "Give it up for
DJ Photek, all the way from London UK" repeatedly and repeatitiously.
This bothered many people (myself included). Between songs photek
would kinda let the record wind down, then there would be dead air
(except for toasting) until the next song. The first 3 or 4 sounded
very, very similar - layers of, well, drums and bass, culminating in
the addition of that "Dink-Dink" (as heard in MBM Babylon, for instance).
Then photek played a song I really liked - lots going on - jazzy,
polyrythmic things. Then back to the same deal, we left shortly after.

Nanjas spun at a "d&b" night in the college town ann arbor. Venue
was very small - no room for projections, local dj was playing (to
me) very formulaic d&b to ocational dancers. Jonah went on first,
at about 10:30p so the crowd was still kinda sparse. People started
to hit the dance floor and he spun a nice set. Amon was up next.
His music had more of an element of funk, and it was disorienting for
some of the D&B kids, quickly they addapted their 'point and hop'
dance style, and the (literal) deadheads did their thing to amon,
too. Amon played much of Permutations in track-order (and i loved it)
By the time Mix Master Morris went on the place was jumping. There
was even some fine break dancing! It was a sucessful night, most people
were unfamiliar with ninja tune - based on overheard conversations -
and many seemed just as blown away as the first time i saw cold cut.

I caught much of the AUX88 set on the radio (driving home from the
a benefit concert that included a micheal stipe/philip glass duet)
At the begining of the set, AUX88 announced that there had been
rumors that they do not play live. They invited someone from the
audience up to the equipment to play with the key board etc...
Set was good, and i love the venue, but i was cashed.

IDM shows i'm looking forward to over the next few weeks:
dj spooky (w/EBN!); dj shadow etc...; MBM;

Show i think may disappoint me: fat boy slim (will it?)
