I think of the SH-01a as a portable, battery powered beater that does
90% of what the SH-101 does. The long envelope, filter heavy effects type
things don't really work out well but then this type of sound design is
always for effect and not tonality. So something else happens, something
different. Its not a SH-101, its a different synth.

The 01a is also a cracking good  MIDI-CV converter and the mod strips are
sent to the CV! This alone has made it worth the ticket. If I control a
SH-101 with it, I can use the 101 modulation and also the SH-01a modulation
together. Really fun.

Perhaps Roland could have done this or that better but they nailed it
with the SH-01a. A tight little VA with a slider farm, portable,
cv/gate and the possibility to do 4 voice poly. No brainer. Its a wonder
of a tool for music making.
