Re: [AH] Roland CR-68 - which MIDI interface?

My first thought?

Use the CR68-M-TMG to upgrade your CR-68 to a CR-78, then use a MIDI =
interface with sync that=E2=80=99s intended for the CR-78.

I assume that the CRX8-M supports both CR-68 and CR-78. Maybe the others =
do, as well.

Of course, this costs more than buying a single kit, but you get more by =
spending more. (perhaps the Stereoping omits sync because that would =
have added significantly to the cost)

Another big problem with this idea is that you=E2=80=99d be on your own. =
You probably won=E2=80=99t find any instructions on how to do this. But =
if you can study the CR-68 and CR-78 schematics to learn how it works, =
and take a look at the MIDI retrofits, you might be able to figure out =
how to piece it all together. The obvious caveat is that there=E2=80=99s =
no guarantee that an upgraded CR-68 will work exactly like a CR-78, but =
it seems feasible.
The uniPulse is not specific to the CR anyway, so it certainly should be =
able to work with a Stereoping-enhanced CR-68. Tubbutec haven=E2=80=99t =
even had their hands on an actual CR-78, but they seem confident that it =
will work, so perhaps their instructions would even be applicable to a =
Frankenstein CR-68+ (the same may be true of the Kenton).

Note that I=E2=80=99m assuming the CR68-M-TMG has multiple boards - one =
analog to add the CR-78 features and another digital for the MIDI. At =
the very least, even if it=E2=80=99s all one board, it should be =
possible to enable only part of the functionality (I hope).

To be clear: I have no experience with any of these, other than =
successfully repairing a CR-78. It was fairly easy to see how to add the =
missing sounds to the CR-68, given a properly fabricated PCB. So, I=E2=80=99=
m not recommended any of the above based on having tried it already.

Brian

p.s. This has me wondering whether the internal sequencer on the CR-68 =
already has trigger outputs for the three missing sounds. Does the CR-68 =
have unique patterns? =E2=80=A6 or does it have the exact same patterns =
as a CR-78 with three trigger channels going nowhere?
