I'm not sure of this is what you mean, but they may use this:

MetaSynth. Made by one of the guys from MetaTools, makers of (cheesy)
Kai's Power Tools. It's interface is just as cheesy, but it is *powerful*.
An excellent sound designer app, but cumbersome because of the stupid
interface. You can draw right in it, or import Photoshop files into it. It
'plays' the picture. Sort of hard to explain.

Download the demo (excellent to sample from) at uisoftware.com ( it's Mac
only)
