Also, be wary that items can travel quickly these days. My storage was broken into in Bellevue and about $10,000 worth of gear = was taken. One item that I found sat in a pawn shop in North Seattle for = a while, then sold on eBay (suspiciously after I called to inform them = it was stolen, but before they opened for the next business day). eBay = wouldn=E2=80=99t tell me where the item was sold, nor would the pawn = shop, and the Seattle police wouldn=E2=80=99t help because it is a = Bellevue case. Anyway, I eventually had someone contact me in response = to a forum posting - apparently they had purchased it from New Jersey = via eBay, and went looking for help with how to use the gear when they = saw my posting. This person was willing to return my gear after I = offered to replace it with something similar (that happened to work = without the problems he was on the forum complaining about - so win, = win). By the way, this item was a prototype MIDI controller that never had a = serial number. Fortunately it was unique enough for me to recognize in = the two separate eBay auctions that it appeared in (the pawn shop = listing that I found, and the second auction that the cooperative fellow = shared after we connected), as well as being unique enough that someone = realized their new/old gear was stolen just based on a textual = description in my posting title. On the one hand, I=E2=80=99m amazed that I managed to get this thing = back. On the other hand, I=E2=80=99m equally amazed at how far it = traveled. The thieves obviously avoided Bellevue, the pawn shop was = quite shady, and the eBay buyers were innocent participants who could = have lost out on some money if the police had actually bothered to catch = them with stolen property. Then again, I probably would have needed a = signed affidavit from the original manufacturer to prove that a = non-serial-numbered item was built for me (and then I=E2=80=99d have to = prove that I hadn=E2=80=99t simply sold it voluntarily). Once the gear = was in Jersey, I would have had no idea to look there. Only because of = an online community were we reunited. Anyway, I hope that was an entertaining anecdote illustrating how = quickly an item can travel across a continent after being separated from = its rightful owner.
