I showed this to my machinist.

He said each of the horizontal "covers" behind a pair of panels could
be bent, obvious enough. The center crescent shaped "backbone" is a
single piece of aluminum. Lots of waste. Each of the 3 legs would
be a piece each too. The base that the 3 legs connect to would be
done on a lathe from a block as well as the cylinders that connect
each panel to the backbone.

So it looks like the backbone and legs create a lot of waste. Not to
worry, recyclers buy the shavings back at pennies on the dollar! ;)

Machining is often wasteful. Where I work we do custom aluminum
enclosures for electronics and even something as large as a 1.5 unit
19" rack starts off as a huge solid block of metal. We have metal
barrels full of shavings (I forgot the machining terminology) that
the recycler picks up often.

I really like the curvature of his rack though. It would be great to
put sequencers and control surfaces (as he has) close to horizontal
and the other panels facing the user. Twould be an awesome system.

Nick.
