Scanner: Lauwarm Instrumentals
Sulfur/Beggar's Banquet BBSULCD002

This is dope. Much better than his previous output to my ears; more
focus on the dark & industrial side of things than on the intercepted
radio samples. It sounds most like his work on the ... vs. Signs Ov
Chaos EP, full of strange beats and horror show orchestral washes. While
the stolen walkie-talkie chatter may be what gets Scanner the most
attention in the press, it's the beats and orchestration that make his
music worth picking up and giving a listen. The strings range from
mournful serialist-sounding chord patterns to Psycho-tic slasher
cadences, making this a great album for the kind of day I just had. The
beats range from a chilling prog plod rockamonster on the opening track
to calculating techstep (tr.5) and everywhere in between, including some
beatless and near-beatless tracks perfect for spelunking. Nothing really
like the material that got him pressed on Rawkus, if that's what you're
looking for; but I can see this being a fine substitute for the
soundtrack to Pi (or any other dark, claustrophobic thriller for that matter).
