If you don=E2=80=99t like flame wars, then why do you bother to write = flame bait? High prices do not occur for no reason; they do not occur in a vacuum; = and they certainly aren=E2=80=99t charged on a whim. If it were possible = for anyone to provide vintage-quality synths for less money, then you = can rest assured that there would be less expensive options, and those = people charging what you call =E2=80=9Chigh=E2=80=9D prices would not = find anyone willing to pay what they=E2=80=99re asking. There is a difference between cheap synths and high-priced synths. The = cheap synths are manufactured in a dedicated factory using robots and = designed to reach a low price point by distributing the costs across = millions of units. Even vintage synths were typically produced on an = assembly line where the one-time setup costs were shared across = thousands or at least hundreds of units. When a synth tech sits down to = repair a single vintage synth, none of the costs can be shared. = There=E2=80=99s also the fact that experienced technicians are rare, and = their time is limited (they don=E2=80=99t take their time just to piss = you off, the good techs are literally too busy to give McDonalds-speed = fast service). The prices are high because the costs are high. If the = costs weren=E2=80=99t high then there=E2=80=99d be more competition that = would bring prices down. All I=E2=80=99m hearing is the whining of entitlement. Vintage synths = were cheap when they were still relatively plentiful, and when most = people were interested in other things. Now, those same old vintage = synths have mostly stopped working, so they are rarer and more expensive = when tastes have cycled back around. Just because some hipsters have = more money than you is not a problem specific to the synth industry - = it=E2=80=99s just a fact of life with fiat currencies being created = constantly and handed out to the people in favor at the moment. Please. On Mar 3, 2018, at 2:53 PM, Stephen Watson <xxxxxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx> wrote: > Simon, I would be offended but politics and flame wars bore me. The = yuppie comment was not a joke. Synths dealers and synth techs who charge = high prices and take their time to fix stuff know a vintage synth is a = luxury item that appeals to that type of clientele, or a hipster. = Moogfest knows this too charging high ticket prices. The downside is = really good vintage sounding modular gear is not accessible. That said, = I wouldn't buy it anyways even though I could, because I'm cheap. A = person is lucky to make any money selling music. Vintage means luxury = and affordable means newer options.
