Some reviews forwarded...

btw... quick note off... the good Synaptic folks recommended the
material on Nature... can't agree more! PS2099 that I just received
is very good. Not avoiding cliches whatsoever, the material is very
much in the vein of jega / skam releases. Although the sound was
wearing a bit thin for me, this is real nice and can't recommend it
enough....

onto the *good* reviews...

RE-view [S]

eight frozen modules - the confused electrician [city slang]

8 track mini-schelp wired by the able hands of one ken gibson,
raised in austin, texas but now residing in big bad ole hollywood.

stranded on an near future alien planet with only a plank [that's
a guitar to you and me] and a drum machine for company, ken paints
a picture in monochromatic lo-teck of j.g ballard-ish polarized
alien scenarios, from brittle quasi dub & searing drone exploration
to equidistant drum n bass. pulsaric white noise and extraneous hiss
dominate the foreground whilst the canvas surfs the same aesthetical
psycho geographical waves as seefeel, 3rd eye foundation and stars
of the lid, mr gibson like his namesake william sheds some 'virtual
light' into dark crystalline spaces. watch out for his contribution
to lo recordings 'future sound of america' compilation [alongside
suction, carpet bomb, d.kristian, schematic etc..]

ryuchi sakamoto - anger / grief [ninja tune]

OK - the concept [deep breath] founding member of Japanese proto-
techno outfit 'yellow magic orchestra-composer-cum actor-cum-multimedia
maestro'sakamoto is due to release a 'four movement' classical album
[discord]. comprised of orchestral, piano, guitar & dj passages,
'discord' will be premiered with a performance broadcast world-wide
over the internet from the 'world financial centre's winter garden'
on it's release date - feb 11th. a week earlier ninja tune release
this 5 track selection of remixes, with the purpose, as sakamoto
espouses of 'dissolution of categorization and musical ecumenism'

ironically enough, on the 12" sakamoto's original edit is the most
interesting contribution, a brief swath of oriental strings and
undertonic modal discord. the reworked versions suffer from yes -
apathetic & unnecessary remix-itise...talvin singh composites
compressed tabla-tic drum n bass beats with vicious stereo panning
that induces one into seasickness, amon tobin uses the amen break -
so -100 points for that, though his atmospherics are "nice", chocolate
weasel's [aka t-power] mix is a flacid downtempo groover that lacks
fokus though displays admirable sonic-hallucinogenic tendencies
that you really need headphones and a spliff to exploit

paddington breaks - smart but casual [ill 006]

over the course of this 6 [count em] tracker, paddy breaks[ahem]
from the aural assaults of his 'spymania all stars' and 'spunk jazz'
contributions to embark on a display of versatility that demonstrates
flair and imagination that the more prosaic drill n bass merchants
[no names..no blame] sadly lack, 'smart but casual' is split 50/50
between tracks over and under the speed of sound

the groovers first: "daytime tv" is a slice of lo-fi quasi funk..
early cabs, aCR spring to mind, a true prole art threat, "biztalk"
shmaltzes on a cheesy but chaotic melody -mmmm, maybe 'sing song'
era-mantronix meets YMO freaking-out with 'computer games' whilst
'red cars' would sit nicely as the theme tune for jack klugman's
terminally hip middle of the day - mid-70's forensic detective show
'quincy'

when paddy hits the acceleration pedal on the agnostic drum n bass
crunchers the middle class intelligentsia flee the room...remember
'irreverence' is the keyword of the 21st century
