just thought id mention the highlights of my trip to pop komm thus far checked out the mouse on mars/oval show lastnight was a bit dissapointed with it oval played what you would expect and it was pretty cool to see him but he lacked any sort of presentation besides sitting behind his laptop/toilet seat - a very nice guy though and it sounded pretty whereas mouse on mars was extremely poppy and sounded completely unrehearsed and like they had gone more mainstream they played stuff off the new album (which i enjoy) but the versions with the live drummer was weak (and i have really enjoyed them play with a drummer in the past) i think they had little time to practice the main attraction so far has been tied and tickled trio who played a killer set tonight (saturday) they debuted some new material off the album which will be released in november if youre not familar with them they combine electronic noodlings with live jazz it was refreshing and exciting to see them play live and the amount of space they gave each other to play was unconventional for electronic music they definitely are on to something, theyre the most exciting live show ive seen in ages mostly because of the presentation and ability to translate the various elements they represent - dub, jazz, electronic stuff - it was most impressive id say they are treading on new ground and carrying a big stick they are serious musicians who can actually play their instruments its good to see that making a comeback - not that there is anything wrong with computer sequencing/programming but i just find it more refreshing to see a group interact with one another and improvise without a bunch of laptops and synthetic sounds - but thats just my opinion sunday night i look forward to karaoke kalk night ive been listening to their new release - donna regina a couple who make music together and i think its absolutely gorgeous really melodic and also recorded without any computers though its full of electronic sounds, the guy triggers everything in time lookout for the 10" and an album to follow shortly nice cover art too - well im off to bed -daniel ps ive listened to the 2 *cdr* set of the warp 10th anniversary too...i think its really boring except for a few tracks...but dont get me started on that...although now i am interested...i enjoy the stereolab remix of BoC and Richard Devines track and Oval's take on Squarepusher Wetschel Garlands take on M Ink and Surgeons remix but for the most part the rest of the tracks come up dry (to me anyways)...it all sounds like a bunch of folks trying to be warp artists and it sounds VERY much rushed...whatever, what do you expect? and if you were wondering i heard the entire record playing somewhere. i dont have a copy, a certain artist brought it to town who happened to spin at a massive rave...lets get down...goodnight
