Responding to lots of different people and suggestions... >> Drum & Bass Album of the Year >Why does this category exist whereas Best Techno or House record doesn't? I was actually planning on dropping this category, along with the Chillout Album one, but the general consensus seems to be that we need more categories rather than fewer, so I guess they'll stay. I wouldn't be adverse to a "Techno Or House" category - is there interest in having one from people other than the original poster? Are there at least five techno/house full-lengths that could be contenders in the category? (This worries me in regards to drum & bass this year, btw...) >New Artist of the Year >New Label of the Year >Vinyl Only Release of the Year >Track of the Year >Remix of the Year I waste enough time tracking down eligibility (i.e. was it released this year?) on the obscure stuff people vote for in the existing categories as it is. Most of the above would just add to that job, with the added headaches of trying to figure out whether a "new" artist has appeared before under another name, whether a given track was previously released on some obscure single or compilation, etc. Anyway, did you know that Massive Attack is somehow eligible for the Best New Artist category in this year's Grammys? >Most Under appreciated Label of the Year >Most Under appreciated Artist of the Year Someone addressed these nicely... if everyone thinks something's underappreciated, how underappreciated is it, really? >Best Live Show of the Year This is far too dependent on where the individual voter lives; people from London will vote for entirely different things than people from Los Angeles. Records to a certain extent are on a level playing field, since anyone can get everything that's available through mail order (with the obvious caveats about people not being able to afford everything and stupid stuff like limited editions). >Artist to watch for in 1999 It seems to me that buzz on new IDM artists before they've actually released records is limited to people who get promos and demo tapes and the like, which to me means this category would make the poll less inclusive, which I don't want. >Most Anticipated LP/release for 1999 I'm totally against this, because people necessarily will be voting without having heard what they're voting for. Whatever wins (hell, whatever's nominated) in this category will be listed on the mailing list homepage for years to come, even if it turns out to be a bad record. I don't want newbies buying records that turned out to be disappointments just because a lot of people were "anticipating" them around poll time. > Best Album purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998) > Best Single purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998) > Best Compilation purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998) This is completely out of the scope of this poll. I may try to do an all-time IDM poll around June or July '99, but until then, let's stick to '98. I thought I was behind schedule, but I was looking over last year's poll materials, and the first-round ballot went out on 10 Dec last year, so we do have a bit of time to continue this discussion without passing any deadlines.
