Hello Ben, that's strange. The level of the up/down sounds should not depends upon the shift frequency. This points to a problem with the quadrature oscillator (i.e. that the sine and cosine are not stable/present at each frequency). I don't think that it's a problem of the adder/subtractor for the up/down generation. I'd recommend to measure the sine and cosine of the oscillator while the frequency is changed. I also don't think that capacitors are responsible. That's very uncommon (but who knows ...). In the first place I'd replace the integrated circuits and then the (trimming and normal) potentiometers. And also the correct adjustment is very important. I remember that it took up to one hour to do carry out all the adjustments of the A-126.
